Vamos a Espana!

I'm heading to Spain! Thank you, OLG's Distinguished Teacher Award, for giving me this incredible opportunity to see and experience beautiful Spain. It will be an adventure of a lifetime, for which I am so grateful.

I'll be in Spain from July 9-23. For the first week of the trip, I'll be cycling along Spain's Camino de Santiago. Then, I'll spend a week exploring the art, history, architecture, music, & culture in and around Barcelona and Madrid.

Join me on this journey by checking in with this blog, commenting on experiences, and asking any questions you might have about Spain. Be sure to sign your name as part of your posting, otherwise it will show as "anonymous."

I can't wait to share this journey with you! Vamos a ESPANA!

  2. Yay! I'm looking forward to your updates! We just got back from Ireland last month, so you'll have to tell Europe "hi" for us!

  4. Buenos Dias!
I arrived in Madrid yesterday afternoon, and, after a short nap, spent the day exploring the city. It was definitely an adventure! Whether it was a lack of sleep, poor map-reading skills, or the fact that the streets of Madrid all seem to end in the same plaza...I ended up walking in lots of circles yesterday. Ha!

I finally made my way to the Royal Palace (Palacio Real) and gardens. Beautiful! So much history in one building. By touring the Palace, I learned a little more about the Habsburg family and their dynasty, as well as the current royal family. King Juan Carlos I, the current king of Spain, is known as the "People´s King" because of the reforms he has made in Spain during his reign. The Palace maintains artifacts from throughout the Habsburg dynasty and the Spanish monarchy, much like our White House preserves and showcases the history of our Presidents. I was unable to take photos in the Palace, but there will be some posted of the exterior of the building, and the surrounding gardens. Sooo beautiful!
After exploring the Palace, I wandered through the streets, gardens and Cathedral, enjoying the people, art, and streetlife of Madrid. It was a wonderful way to begin my journey in Spain.

Today I begin my bike tour journey. I´ll be heading up to Leon with the tour group. We´ll begin cycling tomorrow!

I had some trouble uploading my pictures last night, so hopefully I´ll have photos posted for you by tomorrow! Until then...ten un buen dia!! Miss Hoch

  6. Hi Emily! Yes, I am definitely going to be visiting Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church when I am in Barelonaa next week. Today I rode my bike to the town of Astorga and am staying in Hotel Gaudi...which is RIGHT across the street from another of Gaudi's churches. Wow, is it gorgeous! I hope you're having a great summer so far!
    Love, Miss Hoch
